The main character in my book im reading “The Freedom Maze”
is Sophie like I said before in my previous entry. While Sophie was staying at
her Grandmother’s house she became very bored and when Sophie gets bored she
grows to be very curious. I would say Sophie’s main desire is to discover new
things and to keep her self-occupied at her Grandmother’s. I have noticed a couple
of themes that have started to appear. One of the obvious themes is slavery. Other
themes im starting to notice are womanhood, courage and family ties.

Summer assignment entry 1
The main character in The Freedom Maze is a 13-year old girl
named Sophie. While staying with her grandmother for the summer, Sophie
discovers a maze that transports her back in time to a sugar plantation where
she is mistaken for a slave. Sophie in
the 1960s in Louisiana as she spends the summer with her aunt and grandmother
at the Oak Cottage, the old family home of the grand Fairchild family from back
in the “good old days”. Sophie has been left behind by her mother who is now
pursuing a new career after divorcing Sophie’s father. She barely hears from
her father now living in NY with a new wife and her relationship with her mother is
fraught with tension. She constantly bemoans Sophie’s behavior as unladylike,
complains about the state of her unruly hair, about her clothes, about her time
spent reading books. It’s been like this forever and Sophie has developed
strategies available to her in dealing with her mother they involve a lot of
shutting up and a lot of appeasing.
