Of the choices provided on the
list for this summer reading project the Freedom maze really got my attention.
Just the title alone makes the book sound very interesting. Also I saw a couple
of personal connections between myself after reading this interesting novel. One
of the personal connections I saw was that the title Freedom maze connects to
me because I also had family members that were slaves and that had to gain
freedom. Another personal connection I noticed was that the main character Sophie
went over to her grandma’s house she became very bored and often wondered off. I
realized that I do the same thing when im at my grandma’s house. My last
personal connection I noticed was Sophie was 15 and so am I so I bet we go
through the same situations as teenagers. I would specifically recommend this
book the too anyone that loves to learn about freedom and slavery because the
main topic in this book I slavery and freedom. Personally I fund this book rather
boring at times but it did have certain parts in it that really drew my
attention. I would still recommend this book because I feel that others still might
find the book interesting.

Summer reading entry 3
“Sophie Martineau looked out the window of her mother’s 1954
Ford station wagon and watched her life slide behind her into the past. It was raining.
It rained a lot in May in Louisiana, but Sophie couldn’t help feeling this rain
was personal. It was bad enough to be saying good-bye to her friends and her
school and the house she’d grown up in to spend the summer stuck out in the
bayou with grandma and aunt Enid, knowing she’d be coming back to a different neighborhood
and a different school in the fall. Doing it in the rain was just rubbing her
nose in it.” Sherman 1 I believe this paragraph is hooking because the author
took time to write how the rain made the day worse. The author was being descriptive
and using details throughout the paragraph in order the capture the reader’s
attention. The context of this paragraph
is that she just moved and that the author wants the reader to realize how much
the main character Sophie has lost. Also the reader did a great job with
capturing a bit of the past. The descriptions and details make it easy to
visualize, almost like you’re watching a movie. Personally I thought that the paragraph
was easy to relate to.

Summer entry assignment 2
The main character in my book im reading “The Freedom Maze”
is Sophie like I said before in my previous entry. While Sophie was staying at
her Grandmother’s house she became very bored and when Sophie gets bored she
grows to be very curious. I would say Sophie’s main desire is to discover new
things and to keep her self-occupied at her Grandmother’s. I have noticed a couple
of themes that have started to appear. One of the obvious themes is slavery. Other
themes im starting to notice are womanhood, courage and family ties.
Summer assignment entry 1
The main character in The Freedom Maze is a 13-year old girl
named Sophie. While staying with her grandmother for the summer, Sophie
discovers a maze that transports her back in time to a sugar plantation where
she is mistaken for a slave. Sophie in
the 1960s in Louisiana as she spends the summer with her aunt and grandmother
at the Oak Cottage, the old family home of the grand Fairchild family from back
in the “good old days”. Sophie has been left behind by her mother who is now
pursuing a new career after divorcing Sophie’s father. She barely hears from
her father now living in NY with a new wife and her relationship with her mother is
fraught with tension. She constantly bemoans Sophie’s behavior as unladylike,
complains about the state of her unruly hair, about her clothes, about her time
spent reading books. It’s been like this forever and Sophie has developed
strategies available to her in dealing with her mother they involve a lot of
shutting up and a lot of appeasing.

In my opinion Kattniss Everdeen finally grows up in Mockingjay, the last book of the hunger games series by Suzanne Collins. In the end, I felt like Katniss was trapped between a rock (President Snow) and a hard place (President Coin) and her solution was probably the only thing she could have done. Details got a little vague and drawn out after the elevating moment, and it all felt a little anticlimactic... I was left wondering how life could go on normally, given what happened, and I think it would have felt like that to Katniss too. Brilliant but brutal.

The worst thing in my book is...
I'm really enjoying the book Mockingjay so it was kind of difficult thinking about the worst thing in it. I believe the worst thing in this book is it would be very challenging to stay focused and really enjoy this book if you have not read the two other books before Mockingjay. Mockingjay is a series the first book is "The Hunger Games" which was personally my favorite. The second book was "Catching Fire" it was good but definitely not as good as the hunger games. And the last book in this series is "Mockingjay". The main reason I think it would b difficult to just start reading Mockingjay first is because you wouldn't really know a lot about each Character.
• Are any characters in your book comparable to characters you’ve seen in other books, television shows, or movies? Can you compare any characters to someone you know in real life? Mockingjay
In the Mockingjay there are many characters that remind me of other characters in different books. One that really stood out to me was how President Snow Reminded me of Lord Voldemort from Harry Potter. One reason they seem alike to me is because they are both of high ranking or power. Also President Snow reminds me of Hitler. Because they are both dictators. President Snow clearly was as evil and cruel as Hitler though. That's why I believe he is more like Lord Voldemort.
